I got these as bookshelf speakers, and was happy with the features advertised. Pairing bluetooth was simple and drama-free. The speakers come with an assortment of cables which you may or may not need, which is always nice.

I initially had them about 8 feet apart, on opposite ends of bookshelves and there were huge phasing problems. Everything sounded loud, but weak, especially vocals and everything in the midrange. Moving them closer improved the sound quality, and putting them on opposite ends of the same shelf, maybe 3 feet apart, seemed to be the sweet spot. Keep that in mind when looking at speakers, particularly nearfield monitors, which seem to be a lot more susceptible to issues with placement.

I spent some time listening to a mix of vinyl through the Line-In jacks on the back (using my turntable''s built-in preamp) and then using the Bluetooth link for some Spotify. I ended up with the treble raised just a hair, and the bass up a bit more than that, I really enjoyed the overall sound. It''s not room-filling, and a few favorite parts of favorite songs that I could easily pick out on full-size speakers got lost in the mix on these, but that''s just me nit-picking. They''re fine speakers, especially for the price.

At the end of the day, these make for a great upgrade from your typical bluetooth box. Any music lover who primarily listens through their phone or laptop speakers will enjoy the difference once they experience the sound coming through dedicated drivers.

As other reviewers have stated, the sound is excellent for the money. So, here are a few tips for your first day with these speakers:
1) The Bluetooth light is on the upper left hand side of the front of the right speaker. At least I kept looking for the red power-on light to turn blue.
2) If you have multiple devices that you wish to connect with Bluetooth, try them all until one connects. In my case, my Android and apple phones did not initially connect, but my laptop connected immediately. After that, all devices connected flawlessly and quickly when activating the Bluetooth.
3) Only the right speaker is powered, so there is a speaker wire to connect from the right speaker to the left one. Unless you use this wire, the left channel will remain silent. Sounds obvious, but, when I think of Bluetooth I think wireless.
4) The bass and treble equalizers are very effective, and I find that putting each at the "+4" setting give the needed bass punch and treble clarity I prefer, without muddling the midranges. Pretty good for a $140 speaker.
5) These work very well in confined spaces, such as an 8 x 12 room. If in a larger room, as others have mentioned, try to be close (between 4 and 10 feet away.)
6) Enjoy!

I waited for these to be available in black. I emailed Edifier prior to ordering and they got back to me pretty fast with an answer so I figured that was good customer service and helped secure my decision to try these speakers out. I think they sound great. Way better than my 18-year-old Bose 2.1 setup. Granted, that''s the difference between that kind of a time frame and the advancement of technology so take that for what it''s worth. The Bluetooth works great with my phone. I have them set up on my desktop and I use them every day. I love great sounding speakers but I wouldn''t call myself an audiophile. I listen to a lot of heavy metal screaming stuff, rap, oldies, and a lot of other genres except country music and these speakers sound pretty good playing all of it. I can''t complain. Super happy.

The original plan I had for these speakers was to use in my living room as bluetooth speakers to stream music from my tablet via spotify. Then I learned from a friend that a wired connection always produces the very best sound. So with this knowledge I moved these into my bedroom where my computer is and I hooked them up with the analog wire. Then I purchased a new sound card that has a digital out and started using these wired to the computer with the digital output wire. Allow me to mention that as far as I can tell from my research this is the only model that Edifier makes that has a digital output, a coaxial output and a sub-out all in one model. That sold me on this model. I will be very frank in telling you that I was not completely blown away by these at first. The mids were excellent, the highs very good but the bass output just barely adequate. I was almost going to return these and give up on them because drums sounded like the banging of a cardboard box. There was an artificial sound to the drums that lacked warmth. So at a close friend''s urging I purchased a subwoofer and hooked it up to the sub output in the rear of the right speaker. It was at this point that all the cards aligned for me and these speakers soared in terms of sound reproduction. If you are looking for a very good budget subwoofer I recommend the Dayton SUB-800 which is 80 watts. Today I can''t imagine using any other set up on my computer then these speakers with a subwoofer. The cardboard drum sound is gone now that I have a subwoofer. My experience provided me with the very best sound that these speakers could deliver.

I recently purchased a set of the 1700bt for desk top while I mixed. Fell in love with them! Was carting them back and forth to my other apartment at work so I could mix after work.At the Edifier price point, decided to try these to not damage the 1700s. Got them today. Simple hook up and options to add a sub if I chose too. Must say, volume is impressive! Nice clarity and low distortion at full volume. I play around with EDM music and these handle it GREAT. My 1700s do have the upper hand in sound quality as far as highs and some vocals, but these have some bass for their size! Again, these are not something Afrojack or Steve Aoki would have in their studios, but at $140 delivered to your door, find me better ones! If I get a sub for them, I will probably get a call to the office for noise complaints!

Basic sound quality appears to be very good. It makes a great PC speaker. I especially like that you can have multiple audio sources and switch between them with the included remote control.
My only gripes with them are:-
1) The "Soundfield Spatializer" didn''t work on the first unit that I received. I didn''t know what to expect for this new feature, but a marked difference in the tone and volume of the audio playback didn''t sound like the correct response.
however, Edifier were good enough to send me a second unit to replace the first one, without first having to return the defective unit. (Good customer service!) Now, on the second unit the "Soundfield Spatializer" does switch between a very focused and a disbursed sound field, as the description says.
2) The range of the tone controls seems to be very limited - I found it hard to notice any effects on the audio I was listening too. I used fixed frequency tones to verify that they did actually work, but, as I said above, the effect on your music may be hard to discern. Audible Base starts at about 45Hz and the volume of this can be significantly reduced or increased. With other frequencies the effects are less discernible.

Overall, I think that these are great speakers. I haven''t tried the "Soundfield Spatializer" and sub woofer output, so I don''t know yet whether they are useful or not.

These were purchased to replace an older Klipsch 2.1 system i was using in my living room. For the space, I was getting decent sound, but not as full as I wanted. Now for what it is, the Klipsch served its purpose for over 4 years, but I figured it was time for an upgrade. After getting the Edifiers all set up, it was time for the big reveal. Now for my application, I pre-planned to add a Sub, and since these Edifiers were a quality over volume system, I went with a high quality subwoofer a Triad Omnisub 10. I wanted more sound than what the Klipsch 2.1 setup could provide, but I also wanted the simplicity of not needing an amp. This setup fulfilled my needs much better than I had hoped. I cannot comment on how these perform without a sub, but with my Triad, once I got them both dialed, I am truly happy with the quality and volume of the sound I am getting out of these. If you enjoy quality, full sound, that is not sharp, nor muddy these with a high quality Subwoofer will trounce any sound bar you can buy.

These Edifier R1280DBs Active Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers are the perfect balance of sound quality and price for bookshelf speakers. The sound is rich and vibrant and has pretty good bottom-end bass without being paired with a subwoofer. Just have realistic expectations with these speakers when it comes to sound. They sound amazing but won''t have a bottom-end rumble without a subwoofer. I only mention this because I''ve seen user videos complaining about the bass expecting a much larger and deeper sound from 4-inch woofers.

The advantage to the "DBs" model is the welcomed addition of Bluetooth 5.0 and a better DAC (digital to analog converter). I''m connecting my PC to the speakers via optical cable and using Bluetooth to connect my Echo Dot for music as well as my MacBook Pro for work.
Bluetooth connection is fast and snappy. Connected devices are easy to switch out and DBs version has a much better remote than its predecessor.

I highly recommend these speakers. They fill up my home office space nicely but I also think they would work well for a bedroom home audio or medium-sized living room. Like I mentioned earlier - if you want that deep bottom-end bass, a subwoofer paired with these speakers would be the way to go.

You won''t find better speakers for the price.

I was looking for inexpensive speakers to use with my PC. Playing music was my primary goal. Reviews were good for this model. Importantly, reviewers were impressed with the sound quality. I disagree. As an audiophile with much experience with high end stereo systems, I wasn''t expecting a hi-fidelity listening experience from such cheap speakers. And, in fact, these speakers delivered a mediocre performance with regards to sound quality. Music audio was flat and boring, even after adjusting equalizer curves to account for my perceptions. Still, I was prepared to accept this deficiency and live with my purchase. I figured that poor audio fidelity was probably typical behaviour for low end speakers such as the R1280DBs. But after a few weeks of listening I began to notice a buzzing sound coming from the right speaker. It would only happen with specific audio inputs. Certain songs, notes, or instruments could invoke this defect. It sounded more like a mechanical problem rather than electrical noise. Like one of the drivers was damaged or perhaps vibrating inside the cabinet. This sound was annoying and unacceptable. So I arranged to return them. Still needing speakers, I made another Edifier order. No longer trusting the R1280DBs, I opted for another model. For an extra 20 dollars, I got the R1700BTs speakers. I expected similar performance, but instead I was pleasantly surprised. These new speakers sound great and I am very pleased with them. And they don''t buzz or rattle. My advice is to not buy the R1280DBs. The R1700BTs costs only a few dollars more and they deliver a much more satisfying music listening experience. That model, however, does not have optical and coaxial inputs.

I''d had my eye on these speakers for several months, reading reviews, watching videos (not a great way to get the feel for how a speaker sounds, of course), and reading up on the specs. I have never seen a product you can buy online with such a high percentage of positive reviews. Not just positive, in most cases. Glowing! Almost everyone says that you cannot get a better punch for your dollar than these little guys. They were all 100% RIGHT! The entire experience setting up these speakers is a joy, even a visual one. The finish (I got the wood finish) makes the product look so pro and classy. It did strike me as I was unpacking them that they are smaller than I had imagined they''d be. So much so that I thought maybe I was in for a nasty letdown. But, they do NOT disappoint. I did the simplest thing first, so I could start listening as quickly as possible: I hooked a coax line from a Blu-ray player directly to the system and threw in a CD. Right away, it was so crisp and punchy, everyone in the room was blown away. We tried songs from a few different albums, mostly 70''s and 80''s pop and rock for now (I listen to a very wide range of music, and can''t wait to test some nice jazz and blues in a quieter environment) and increased the volume to the point where we could hardly believe this little system was filling our living room so easily. Then... I realized I was so excited to get going, that I hadn''t hooked the SECOND speaker up to the first yet. We were only listening to half of the system. Well, I hooked that satellite speaker up and the news only got better. More power, more clarity. Right now, they are only set up about two feet apart as we have an older TV that has a shelf on top, but when we redecorate the living room and get a flat panel, I think I will be spreading them apart and maybe getting stands for them. I am sure this will only improve the experience. Then we switched to watching TV through them, and for me, with a case of tinnitus that varies in intensity day-to-day, the improvement in understanding general speech on TV shows is dramatic. The tinnitus usually covers up low-volume consonants in peoples'' speech and the crisp tweeters allow me to hear small details in what people are saying much more easily. My daughter is getting her own apartment soon, and has expressed the desire to save up for a pair of these, as the sound quality from flat-panel TVs is less than enjoyable and these improve that greatly. You can''t get better sound, better, cleaner amp power, classier appearance, or better size economy for this amount of money anywhere. They feel like they are well-built, with some weight, no shoddy corners or cheap workmanship. I also sent a bluetooth signal to them from my turntable, and it was trouble-free and sounded great. The turntable and speakers are across the room from each other for now, and there was no skipping or cutting out of the signal, and it did not sound overly compressed. Our TV setup has a Roku which is tied to our Tidal account, and we played a few albums through them this way also. You can hear the difference, of course, between CD and Tidal, but that is in no way the fault of these speakers, that is just what streaming music sounds like compared to uncompressed. In any case, it was still extremely enjoyable. Any level of purchase would be beneficial for this line of speakers, as they are identical from the basic with RCA inputs, all the way up through the added features, although I went all the way with the digital/BT and subwoofer output. I don''t currently have a powered subwoofer, but I went for that feature because the Goodwills and charity shops are starting to overflow with that type of equipment, and if I added a piece like that, (and hid the sub in a corner, say,) then this system would be nearly unstoppable, and amusingly baffling to show to visitors. I am imagining that once you add a subwoofer, you can reduce the bass output on the system itself, thus increasing possible undistorted volume capability. I will add, that I got these to a very high volume with little, or mostly no, noticeable distortion. The built-in amplifier is very clean and outputs no noise on mine when there is no program passing through. Summary: AWESOME!

I bought the R1280DBs after reading all of the positive reviews for other models. I figured that these were the newest edition and should be even better. When plugged in to power the speakers have an electrical hum. When turned on the hum turns to static that gets louder as the volume is turned up. The static is present when music is and isn''t playing. Static is present when the speakers are connected to an audio source and when no connections are present (nothing connected at all). I hope that this is just a defective set and isn''t a problem with the new DBs edition.
